My preliminary researching shows this story at least has some potential to it. Old newspapers were filled with stories of buried treasure and outlaws. They didnt care if it was 100% BS, the stories helped sell papers. So much of the time when you begin to dig into one of these stories you find that the details and reports dont match anything on the ground. The preliminary satellite imaging search (so much easier than the old school boots-on-the-ground ) actually show potential.
1- there is farming in the area, but the locations look sporadic.
2- there is river and rocky / hilly formations which would be good for hiding out
3- there are some unusual deep, straight draws which could very likely be part of a collapsed cave (hence the head of it could have a cave entrance)

So the next step for any searcher would be researching property lines, owners, door knocking and then actually searching for a cave.
