Look promising? Have poked around the lower downstream side of this and found some black sand. Gonna build a PVC sucker to try and get in the nooks and crannies at the base.

Would the upstream side be better? Will have to do some major cleaning as it acts as a catchall for all the limbs,branches and leaves.

if that is in gold country...then the dam was made to feed the sluice. look for piles of rocks downstream of the dam. there should be two types of piles...larger than fist size river rocks... second type is the smaller stones...pebble sized...hit that with your detector.

Yes looks promising.

Hike the area and look for old digs.
Some one may have set that up as a clean up site.
Source may be out of sight.
