So I found this rock while relic hunting in Gettysburg a few weeks ago. Get the pro pointer anywhere near it and it just screams

. It is not magnetic. Any thoughts?

The flattened crystaline structure reminds me of limonite and ore that can contain amounts of oxidized iron. The amount of iron may be low enough so cause it to be non-magnetic, but enough to set off a detector. Simply put...a "hot-rock". See if you can draw on paper with it...that would indicate a high level of graphite.

I get some similar looking items up here in NH,
they seem low density, I assumed some type of coal.

Does the rock seem light in weight? Just as Phanntom stated above, it looks like a hot rock. I come across these from time to time myself.

I dig them all the time in Virginia.
