Rockingham county

I was raised in Shenandoah, Va. (@ 6 miles north of Elkton); I remember a MD club in Harrisonburg, Va. at one time. Live in Lynchburg, Va. now, so don't get up that way much. I would check with James Madison University or some "hobby" shop; I HAVE seen MD'ing equipt at the Valley Mall, so SOMEONE is "doing it". Good Luck! HH!

I have a solid "in" around the port republic battlefield, which is roughly where I am living now. If you have any desire to trudge the mountain or river with MDs I'd find time to join.

Anyone wants to go let me know... Until I go back to work I have some time :-) PM me and I will shoot you my phone number...

I moved back to Harrisonburg (3rd time) at the beginning of the month and always happy to detect with folks. Have plenty of time until I find work again. (Know of any available work? Particularly anything under the table to get started? (The ****ing document laws are insane now --forced on states by the feds--and I'm in a catch-22 trying to get legal documents. And I was born here and lived my whole life in the U.S. Both of the copies of birth certificates always worked before. Grrrrr.) Anyhow....

Anyone ever had any issues detecting H'burg public property? (I only found one item in the municipal code that may pertain but it would take someone being a royal PITA to try to make it stick legally.)

No CW relics yet -- wasn't detecting yet by the last time I moved away in '89 -- but already found my first tombac button here. :) (Never found one in eastern MA, although I found lots of other wonderful things there -- including some CW-era relics from an arsenal proving grounds.)

I was a re-enactor (CSA - Comp. I, 10th Va. Cav/Infantry), and we had a "battle" at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in MD... in 1973. Born & raised in Shenandoah Valley (Page County; Shenandoah, Va.)... been to ALL the CW battlefields; ALL "picked clean". Best to hunt where camps were in the woods surrounding the battlefields; one guy found SIX rifle barrels with fixed bayonets buried under a foot of dirt (wooden parts were gone). ANYWAY, live in southern part of Virginia, now; NOT interested in "heading back up there". As a kid, I found cannon balls, minnie balls, ringed bullets, buttons... gave MOST of it away; just a kid, ya know. SEVERAL other treasures of notes: buried cannons buried near the banks of the Shenandoah River... barrel plugged & filled with GOLD coins; NEVER FOUND; ROYAL Gov. of Virginia & his Knights of the Golden Horseshoe, discovered the Shenandoah Valley and buried a whiskey bottle with a note inside, claiming the S.V. for the King of England.
Buried on the bank of the Shenandoah River, west of Elkton, Va.; native ppl, ("Indians") were NOT amused - NEVER FOUND; AND! German settlers were stopped at Rockingham County "line" by Scot/Irish/Brits at ELKTON; Miller/Muller House is as far as they got. Their "battle" is now known as ELKTON FIELDS DAY carnival, with MUCH fighting, when mountain ppl come down from the "hollers"; German settlers buried GOLD, SILVER, etc. near the "Peaked Mountain" (Massenutten); they were gonna use it to buy more land, moving FURTHER south from Shenandoah County & Page County... NEVER FOUND. Good Luck, HH!
