I'm in Central California, Monterey. I am really starting to enjoy metal detecting and want to get more serious. I have a lot to learn, but really need to learn how to do the research. Any guidance for this newbie?

Welcome to the party. Yes there is plenty of good information on this highway. Research at local libraries and at your local museums. Find out your local history so you know where things used to be. That will give you acres and acres of exploration areas. Some you will need permission to hunt so always find out before just hunting. Good Luck and Happy Hunting.
