[h=5]My dad found a coin for me earlier using my metal detector about a foot deep. It is fairly heavy. It has a Romanesque looking face wearing a crown or a fancy hat on the obverse and a man riding a 4 horse chariot on the reverse. It has no visible date and I'll add that it has an ancient relic feel to it. Help identifying it would be appreciated.[/h]

a picture & then a 3 second answer

I didn't take the pictures. If I wanted some up I had to make do with the ones taken. I'll try to get more up soon.

Atg coin obverse.webpAtg coin reverse.webp Obverse and reverse of the coin.

Where was this found???

It was found buried deep on my property. I'm pretty sure it's Alexander the great but I know nothing more about it.

One side is similar to a coin from 400-375 BC Syracuse. The pic below (happens to be a decadrachm) shows a 'quadriga' galloping left, driven by a charioteer holding reins and directing the horses with a goad. Above him, Nike is flying right to crown the charioteer. In the foreground are a cuirass, two greaves, and a Phrygian helmet.

looks like a match to me!
Great find! :)

Thanks for everything. I can't help but wonder where this thing came from.

Tiborn,

Obviously lost from someone's collection......good going to Mackaydon on the ID.

Regards + HH

Bill

Thanks, Bill, but many coins (and rulers) had the quadriga on the reverse. To properly ID the coin, the obverse needs to be ID-ed; and (for me, anyway, to have a chance) that would require a more in-focus pic of the 'face' side.

I'll get another pic of the obverse up soon, I've already given my guess as to who I think it depicts.
