Rusty toy gun

I'm guessing it's an old cap gun. Found today by my 7 year old behind my parents house near a stream. He was thrilled and will be talking about it for weeks to come.

Is it heavy ? Real guns are much heavier than fake guns.... I think it could be real too..

Wow! I had no idea cap guns existed in 1890. Any ideas on how to attempt cleaning or if we should even try?

there is a poster on here who collects old cap guns and his moniker is Creskol. Hopefully he will see this post and give you all the info. as far as cleaning it that is up to you. unless it came from salty air, I would personally leave it as it. but if it is a little 'flaky' you can give it a wire brushing to get it all off. if it came from somewhere near the beach it will likely have salt in it and will likely fall apart over time. to prevent this you would need to run it through electrolysis. or have someone do it for you. A lot of people on this forum do electrolysis and your small item should be easy to run. I run electrolysis on Civil War iron I find because if I don't they will crumble due to the salt. if you decide you want this you can send it to me and I will do it for you and mail it back to you at no charge. it should not take long to do. if it is run through electrolysis it will alter it dramatically. it will look closer to the day it was made but will show the pitting, etc. but once altered you can't go back. it is up to you. tell him congrats. Nice find. others will likely chime in on this and give their opinion.

I'd use electrolysis, however you need to first determine if it has any bullets in it.

It's the proud Momma! And most of my finds are aluminum cans and plow points...lol. As for the salt I'm not too concerned it was by a tree and buried under leaves and dirt... Curiosity has the best of us and we were hoping to see some kind of markings.

You were dead on this one! Finally cleaned it up and u can make out part of the colt on one side and June marking on the other. Thanks jewelerguy!
