Safari's ID scale

Hey guys I was wondering if all coins on the scale read between 35 and 40. I watched Tex Kenseys video on the recovery speed and the ID scale would read between 37 and 40 for a wheatie. I think the scale goes from -10 to 40 being the highest. Does this mean the Safari cannot distinguish a quarter from a wheatie, dime and so on. Just between high and low conductivities? Thanks Josh

Re: Safari's ID scale

Im planning on getting one this week, but am still reading up like crazy. Ive got a very extensive coin collection to test. Ill post results. Gold, indian heads, large cents. Ya know the good stuff. ;D

Cool, I'm sure a lot of people will be happy to see more testing results with the Safari ;D One thing I'm also curious about is if the numbers change when the coin is in the ground.

Re: Safari's ID scale

I hunt with a Quattro.
The scale of the Safari and the Quattro are the same.
Most coins fall in the 34 to 38 part of the scale. Nickels are 14.
There is some fluctuation but Pennies are usually 34 to 35, dimes hit often at 36-37 and quarters usually 38.

Any silver has a nice sweet tone. So a silver quarter of dime will read pretty close to the same on the scale, but I can hear that flutey silver sound.

Changing coils does make the machine react a llittle differently, but once the sensitivity is adjusted it get's pretty stable again.

Hope this helps.

Brett,

When my Safari comes in and I get in a bit of practice with it, I'll post some numbers for the various objects that I encounter in the ground. I have found that air testing items is not always quite the same as what is achieved in the dirt.

It just shipped out yesterday so I'm hoping at least by early next week it will be in.

Re: Safari's ID scale

I encourage anyone with a Quattro or a Safari to read Andy's book.
He warns that how the detector works, and the numbers displayed may change from one area to another because of the changes in soil makeup. So, to some degree each of us will have to rely on our own localized experience to decide where a particular coin or relic will register where we hunt.

After reading this and Monty's posts I have gone back to reread the book for the 5th or 6th time since last spring.

Good Luck,
Mark
