Carbon fiber is strong as far as structural strength but is fairly soft for abrasion. You can easily sand carbon fiber with regular sand paper, digging in sand is the same thing. A carbon fiber scoop would not last very long digging in sand, and even the shape of the scoop section would likely not be strong enough to avoid splitting or breaking. No need to re-invent the wheel here, modern stainless scoops are the product of years of trial and error. There are titanium scoops available which are a little lighter in weight but they are quite pricey. RTG also makes aluminum scoops. Goodguy, that one you show will not suffice for a true saltwater beach hunter who hunts in water or wet sand and even on dry beach sand would make recovery of a target painfully slow when compared to a professional quality scoop with a long handle. This is the type of scoop Mikey is referring to. Mike, this Stavr stainless scoop weighs about 2&1/2 pounds without handle. (click on photo to make it upright)

Look on YouTube for How to Make a Plastic Shovel and Sieve. There is an Aussie guy that uses one and it seems to work well.
