Hello everyone, I currently only hunt on land and dry salt water beaches with a tejon. I would like to get into the wet sand and waste deep in water. From the research ive done so far it seems id like excal is best but I just cant spend that kind of dough now. Im thinking a pulse machine would fit my budget better. (and yes, I get that they wont disc. like excal) Sand shark seems good but I was wondering if there were any other units out there that cost less but arent junk. Thanks

In my never humble opinion, at under $600.00, you will not find a better, easier to use saltwater, fully submersable detector than the Sand Shark - period. - Terry

Listen to Terry.........The Sand Shark has the lifetime warranty, none of the others don't. If you are going to get one of the new ones, make sure you get the 10" coil installed because you can't change coils anymore as they are hardwired like all the others.

There is also the Sea Hunter Mark II, Infinium LS, White's PI Dual Field and the older Surf PI Pro and Surfmaster Pulse. JW. Fisher makes a PI also but are pricey and not any better.

Sandman, do you really think the 10" coil has that much advantage over the 8"?

I know you can cover more ground, but I also hear pinpointing with the 8" is much easier than with the 10".

I went with the 8" coil after a lot of thought. I have the new hardwired machine. I went with the 8" because it is a smidge more sensitive to the smaller gold - a smidge! It will still walk over a tiny gold earring post where a VLF (if it can hear through the mineralization) will hear it. Don't worry about depth! I had mine on the beach again today and dug 22" for a Dr. Pepper! - Terry

Terry said it all with the pic about the depth. As for the Pinpointing, you can just raise the coil higher in the air, or back off till the signal stops and then slide it forward. The object should be just off the edge of the coil. We do the same with the big DD coils on the Excal too. Besides you should be using a Sunspot Stealth scoop.

I started with the Royal scoop in the photo, and quickly realized it was WAY to small. Upgraded to the Rielly's 6" and it is fantastic - but.. When I find enough gold I will be investing in a Sunspot! Thank's Sandman!

Thanks for all the input fellas. I wanted the 8" coil, but the place I purchased from only had 10.5" & he gave me a good deal. Im really glad I didnt wait for for the 8 because pinpointing with the 10 is a breeze. I have yet to get in the surf so I cant comment on coil flipping up. If its a prob ill just build some sort of adjustable coil brace.

If the coil flips you can make your own coil stablizer for less than $5.00 using nylon parts........

I think Kellyco sells those stabilizers very cheap too.

Those Stealth scoops are realy good. Used to always make my own scoops but lashed out and bought the big stealth late last year. The only weak point I found was the plastic clamp holding the handle to the scoop; That broke very early on and I have replaced it with a stainless steel clamp and now I reckon the whole thing is unbreakable, well almost. :occasion14:
