Maybe some Patriot or Loyalist hid their wealth during the battles of Saratoga in 1777. The battles happened in September and October so maybe he buried the loot and then the winter came, the ground froze, the snow came and he was unable to find it in the spring. Or maybe he died in the battle, or he had to flee as he was on the losing side.
