Hey guys! hooked up with Sentnel on Sat for a much needed hunt. The mosquitos were more hungry than we were and kept us from the woods. The buckle came from a super early homesite and was less than 50ft from the water of a brackish marsh creek. IT was 15" in some of the sweetest soil ive ever put my digger in! LOL. Josh and I both agree that the construction puts the buckle late 1600s-very early 1700s. and it appears to be made of a pewter cast. WE are not quite sure as to the exact use of the buckle due to its size and heft. If anyone has any thoughts as to its exact age range and/or use it would be greatly appreciated. The condition is amazing as I have not done anything to clean this item in the least. Not pictured (because im too lazy to get them from my puch) are flat buttons, musket balls and other period items.

The silver half popped up when I got home and hunted one of my sites in the Rock hard dry Red clay BUmmer.
It was laying with 2 big nails down 6"
Silver halfs rock!

No doubt about that one looking "ancient" , James. .....with nice decoration to boot! (I've found a couple like it on very old sites , but both mine are plain :-[ ) Put a tang on that thing and wear it as a your belt buckle !!!

Nice buckle! Sentinel's got the "touch." :notworthy:

That buckle is killer :headbang:

It also looks like it pre-dates 1720 so i think you are right

I'm just guessing... but maybe that buckle is for a pack or saddlebags type thing? I dunno, something larger that you would strap down.

To big for a shoe, right?

The buckle is awesome, JB! But as awesome as it is, am I the only one that would love to see the buttons you left in the pouch? ;D  Congrats on that big silver too! :icon_thumright:

Nana :hello:
