We were hunting a Private school yard that has history back to the 1850s. My one friend found a Silver Washington quarter and then a 1909 Barber Quarter as digs 1 and 2 (lucky dog)...I managed 2 Silver rings, a 1930 Wheatie, and a little clad before some woman approaches us claiming to be one of the school's administrators and telling us we must leave. Well, not seeing her children in her mini-van, I copped an attitude with her, asking her for her name and ID (which she would not produce). Next thing I know the town fuzz is there and we had to pack it up. We talked to a gentleman who proved he was an employee of the school, and we gave him the description of the woman. He claims he knows no one matching that description in administration. Seeing as it cost parents about $15k a year to send their kids to this school, I can see the woman's beef about us being there, but we did get permission from this gentleman earlier. I am going to email him later and see what he can do to get us permission or not from the head administrator...We shall see. We moved on to another school about a 1/4 mile up the road. Nothing but clad and the button here...Oldest clad coin was a 1954 nickel and a 1965 Quarter (I hate them)...

Happy Hunting,

Why do people have to be such jerks? I'm sure shows like Savage Family Diggers do not help our cause much... We're not hunting anyone, what's the big deal? I guess these people don't have anything better to do....

I would have called her out too ... hope you get to go back there. :icon_thumleft:

Great finds. I have started in the Tot Lots here on Ft Riley and one area in particular that was the site of last years October Fest/Carnival. Just this weekend these spots have netted around 7.00 in clad. If I had been thinking I would have counted it.

It has been discussed on here in different forums but to have a letter from the Administration would have been nice to have with you. Oh well, the heck with that busy body, was probably sore about something and took it out on you. ::)

You shouldn't be hunting on private property without permission. That kind of behavior is what gets us banned from hunting even public property in many cities across the country. Rick Savage is no model for ANY kind of behavior related to detecting.

Susan, they had spoken with someone from the school and he had granted permission to hunt. The "Busybody" I mentioned was just showing her posterior probably she had nothing better to do. We see a lot of that on military installations with the spouse (usually the wife of a Commander or Command Sergeant Major) of someone who is command or in charge of a unit. These spouses are usually trying to wear their husband/wife's rank.

Nice finds! Congrats and HH!

Read the whole post...We did get permission...Just not written permission. The gentleman we talked to was one of the teachers at the school, and a board member.

HH,

gogogopher try this. Next time your out carry a hand full of pull tabs and other crap you find and show to whom ever wants you leave, then ask them if they would like you to put it back. More than once I've had somebody telling me that I shouldn't be detecting in the parks or schools untill I show the stuff I'm picking up.

Why would you leave when you had permission?

Nice finds by the way!

I think you did the right thing by leaving. Creating a scene would have ended up closing it to you for good by the board. Getting written permission is the way to go. Stinks to leave for that day but for good is worse. Good job and smart thinking.

Poorman you are absolutely correct! Pick the fights you know you can win and live to argue another day! Wise words.

Absolutely right...The Gentleman that gave us permission left the school for a while to get supplies at the local hardware store...He could not be found when the cop was there, so we just ceased hunting. He came back, but by that time, the woman and the cop had left. We did not want to push our luck, and the area is the home area of one of the friends that was with me...Do not need the cops looking badly on him now.

HH,

It was the term "the fuzz" that got me to read this thread. I hadn't heard that in more than 30 years! Thanks for the memories.

That what I thought. Although with most our land we have signed contracts, many are just word of mouth. We often get approached, so no surprises, & when we do we pull out the name of the permission giver & his contact details. It soon puts to bed any arguements, & there is no need for attritude on either side, specially when your right all the time?? (well 99% of it, we had a couple of mistakes & left quickly saying sorry - wrong land)
We try & get on well with the Police & we often met them & leave our car & personal details with them. Then they don't waste their time on us. They know we should be there & they don't mistake us for hare coursers etc...
