December in Massachusetts means cold days, and colder nights. Before you know, the ground will be frozen solid, and the 2018 detecting season will come to an abrupt end. A very sad state of affairs!
Today was a bright, sunny day in the low 30's, so I made a point to get out digging for a couple of hours. After some wandering around, I got a scratchy signal with a jumpy VDI that peaked in the low 90's. Out pops a large cent.

Checked the hole with my pin pointer, and got another signal. Some rooting around produced a big rusty nail.

Checked the hole again...yup...another signal. Out comes two 1853 Seated Liberty Half Dimes. I've never found one of those before, so I was thrilled! Now that's what I call a coin spill!

A few feet away, I get a faint, but repeating tone in the mid 80's. It took me a while to hack through some roots, but I was rewarded with a trime. It turned out to be pretty toasty, but I still love it.

The rest of the day was pretty quiet, but I did manage a 1939 Mercury dime. If this is how my season ends, I will have no complaints. Thanks for taking a look. HH

Those half dimes are tight..... congrats!

Man you had one awesome outting. Those are some serious saves you found. Congrats to you!!

Nice spill. 1853 seems to be the most common year for halfdimes. I have 3 or 4 myself. Ill bet no one has found two in one hole though

Wow!! now that's a great haul for the conditions, bet you re-hit that spot a few more times.:notworthy:

This should keep you going through the winter. Start planning that spring hunt!

Those two half dimes are awesome. I'd be on a super adrenaline rush after that dig.

Those seated half dimes look straight outta the mint! :occasion14:

nice finds !!! Congrats

great hunt, congrats

Wow. That’s one heck of a 4 silver day. Big congrats!!

May you have more todays before this year comes to a close! Nice 30* digging. I'd say you were rewarded by the Frost Goddess!

The mint reduced the weight of silver coins in '53. That's what the arrows on the date indicate. With the reduced weight, the mint was able to produce a lot more coins with the same amount of silver. A lot more coins than usual were produced that year. Gary
