These are the coins from 2 local school yards we visited today. My heart about stopped when I flipped the plug and that large coin was stuck to the bottom. I thought it was a silver dollar but its not. I'm not sure what it is. Looks like some very faint Chinese writing on one side. The other side is too bad to make out.....anyone have any idea what it is?

Nice finds! The larger coin does look like silver; or silver plated. Is that rust spots or pits on the surface? Can't tell, maybe get a closer picture. Old digger.

Its definitely pitted, not sure if that's rust though. Its also fairly heavy. Ive never seen a Chinese coin so not sure what they look or feel like.

Not saying that the large coin is this or not but here is a quick story.... Was out with my brother, I was coin shooting and had the detector eliminating iron. My brother the practical joker he is said try over there, "I was getting some weird hits but couldn't find anything"... I went over the area and didn't find anything. He proceeded to go over it again, gets a hit, digs a plug and puts on an act... then flips me this silver dollar sized coin. I said I had just gone over that spot and didn't get a hit... So I put the coin on the ground and swing over it with my detector and it hits as iron... pull out a magnet and it doesn't stick..... Then I get the real story: This was a chinese coin/token that you could buy at a chinese restaurant for 50cents... cool looking too, dragon on one side some rulers face on the other and dates ranging in the 1600's...... Must be some cheap stainless to hit in iron, look like silver and rust! I took mine to plant in VB and just walking around for a few hours in the mist, it was all rusty!

I can make out the 5 in Chinese but that's about it :dontknow:

Looks like you have at least one Washington silver quarter there. Is it?

Thanks everyone..Cliff, that's a funny story...that may be one of those tokens.
Relicman, I don't think any are silver. Silver is only pre 1964 is that correct? I'm new at this and trying to learn. :-)

Silver U.S. coins are 1964 and before in denominations dimes, quarters, and half dollars. For half dollars years 1965-1969 are 40% silver if I recall correctly. Just noticed that I did not mentioned the dollar coins. But those are a lots less likely to get confused with clads I would hope :headbang: !

I bumped this because I found some more information about the large unknown chinese coin. You can see the bust on the coin when looking carefully and its the same as a 1920 yuan silver coin I found on google. Can anyone tell me is there any reason the coin would have the discoloration and what appears to be rust on it? Could this be a fake? Have you seen others like this that were fake? The coin looks and feels like silver except for the discoloration/rust. Thanks and any info would be much appreciated.

Hard to tell without seeing the back. I collect Japanese coins but it is definitely not one of them. I find quite a bit of Chinese coins but they are INCREDIBLY hard to classify. If I could see the back I might be able to ID it. Have you also checked Taiwanese coins? Could explain both the discoloration and Chinese characters.

I'm at work tonight but tomorrow I'll try to get much better pics of the coin and upload so can easier see. Does the coins you find like this normaly rust?

No they don't normally rust. I usually buy them at auction or at the coin store. Most of the quality coins are made of silver, copper, or bronze so they last. Yours is definitely Chinese/Taiwanese and not Japanese. Therefore, all of the tin types and aluminum made during the war are out. I think its more modern but you never know. I would suggest if anyone finds an older non-cash coin variety that they buy it. The price on coins from the 1880-1900's have gone up quite a bit. I bought one page of Chinese copper coins at auction for a $1 and I easily had over $50 in value if not more.
