Scrap Brass or something else?

Found this today, at first thought I was thinking just a piece of scrap 1" pipe, then I looked at it and it has at design with a perfect square opening..I am stumped..

I wonder if it didn't at one time have cork in it? Look at the similarity to a Holy water bottle stopper the design is modern but similar.hwb72129a.webp

Could be, since the ballast refuse used was from NYC in the 1800's. However, one thing holding it up for me is the square facet cut into it.

Ok, Ballasts are used to keep ships upright and stable. That being said, the barges/vessels used in my area in the brick industry during the 1800's used refuse (garbage, etc) from NYC to keep ships upright and they purged the ballast tanks of the refuse in the area I have been hunting..

Does that clarify things?

Interesting info on the ballast used during that time frame. Not sure what your item is, but agree with others that it is a pretty cool find.

the same reason you would for any piece.brass was common for rings and custom designed adornments
