I see a lot of users are hunting in Ferrous. What are the advantages to this? Will High Cond coins such as Quarters, dimes etc still give off a sound?

Getting better and finding more with the SE. Still learning though, but hey I finally found a nickel

Thanks

Gayr

I too am interested in the Ferrous hunting mode. But my Explorer isn't due in until next week. It's going to be bench testings for me as we now have snow.

I keep seeing Explorer people posting comments about having problems finding nickels. I don't get that? It must be a lot different from the Minelab Sovereign GT. That detector loved nickels. I can tell most people miss them because when I took the GT out about 1 out of every 10 coins was a nickel.

In ferrous tones and all metal the sound is based in the iron content of the target.
Once you get used to the sounds it is really good way to hunt trashy areas.
Coins even nickles make good solid higher sounds and will show on the screen where the target falls.

If you know conductive sounds very well it's basically the same. You have to be able to recognize a good target when the sounds blend together. Some people might do better at ferrous sounds because they run lower disc. and don't have the expectation of cleaner separate tones like they do in conductive. That's why many users switch to ferrous and think it's so much better, it's because they don't really know conductive as well as they should. I used conductive for a couple of years, went to ferrous for three months, but decided to switch back for good. A couple times after I switched on some very quiet sites and never did any better so have remained in conductive mode since. I see either mode as a choice and not an advantage.

In conductivity mode iron sounds that are close together or big sound just like good coins.....so if you are hunting a really trashy area almost everything with high conductivity including iron and aluminum sound good.
Ferrous mode makes all the iron sound low and even nickles and brass make very distinctive sounds that are easily heard.
But again i tell people my experience and let them make up there own minds.I use to run in conductivity until i read some of the posts on here about ferrous sounds and a i switched just to try it and found it was much easier after i learned what to listen for.

That may be the case. My sites are very different than yours.
