So I'm new to Metal detecting and after some research I bought the Fisher F5, thanks to this site and everyone who helped.

I've been out twice and found 14 coins all 70's and older, I am real happy with this and just want to make sure I'm not missing anything and would appreciate any tips or secrets of the F5. I've got down the sound of newer coins but to date haven't found or maybe I'm passing up older stuff. I know I didn't buy the most expensive unit and I do love it so far another question is what does the discrimination modes and notching actually do? I still find a lot of junk and have junk notched out??

Thanks again for any tips....

Older silver coins will sound pretty much the same as newer clad, there might be somke cases where a zinc penny might hit the 3rd tone and wheaty might set the high tone (providing you have 4 tones selected). My experience with the silver clad and old silver(64 and older) is that the tones and VID numbers are pretty consistant. All the disc does is allow you to discriminate out the unwanted targets, the machine still"sees" them, it just doesn't give you a signal. The notch feature allows you to disc out a type of target(1 or more) in the middle of the disc range but keep the targets on either side of it. Remember if you disc something out, lets say its pull tabs, you will lose other good targets that fall into the same disc range, like gold rings. Thats about as simple as I can explain it. Hope it helps. Read the manual

I have found with mine that even if something is notched out, you might still get a tone the very first time the coil goes over it, but then no tone the next time it goes over. if you look at your screen the second or third time, you will notice the indicator telling you what the item is, but no audible sound.
