Does that 1885 dime say Canada or Newfoundland on the other side. There is a big difference in value depending on which one it is. Newfoundland is the baby you'd want it to be ( mintage of only 8,000 ).

Good luck!

MEinWV, thanks for the reply.....and yes it does say newfoundland, is that good? will post another picture of observe if it helps...

Yes! it is good! The Newfoundland dime is a provincial coin of Canada. The one you have is a Victoria type, minted between 1865 - 1896. I have that same one. I found mine at an old fairgrounds in Maine. Mine seems to be about VG - approx. $90.00

1885 is the lowest mintage in the series, at only 8,000 minted. That is an incredibly low mintage for any regularly circulated coin. I just can't for the life of me understand why it doesn't carry a much better value than it does.

The U.S. 1916-D Mercury dime has a mintage of around 265,000, and yet is so much higher in value. I guess it must be demand or something.

Your coin is valued at $60.00 in good condition, which is what it appears to be in the pics.

Congrats on owning a coin that very few people have, or ever will have. If collector interest would someday happen with it, the value could rise by quite a bit.

Thanks for all the info MEinWV. I was surprised how you knew so much about the coin by just seeing the reverse. 8,000 minted IS amazing. The fact that I ran into someone with one is more amazing. I wish I knew how my father acquired it, since most of the others are from the other side of the pond. You're right, one would think it would have a much higher value. But still, I'm thrilled to have one.

It has such a unique border design that it is not something you forget. I found mine back in the late 70's ( The Golden Age Of Detecting! )

I take it out and look at it quite often. The more interesting question I have is this; If I found one of them in the ground in Maine, how many of them are lost or otherwise destroyed? Which leads me to an even more important question; How many of them are in collectors hands?

If only there was a way to spark some interest in this coin, it might create a new groundswell of interest from collectors, thereby causing the price to skyrocket.

Oh well, at least "we" each have one, and thats all that matters. ...............HH

There's a Nazi coin there...lots of silver, and some Barbers.

Send it to ANACS or ICG. I wish I had luck like that.

Thanks for the info Nick. I haven't had a chance to really check any of the other coins, but I did some quick reseach on the nazi coin..and it's looking like it might be a good one too. Will post back with info and better pics when I get a chance.
