I''m in the market for a new or used detector for use in wet/dry sand and shallow water (knee high surf) I don't plan on getting all the way in the water, I just want a machine that I don't have to worry about getting wet when the occasional wave smacks me. Is the anything out there for under $500? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Gene

There are no new detectors out there under that price, but you can find plenty of used ones. Since you said "Surf," I am assuming you mean saltwater only. There are many threads here about which one is best. The Excal is best for depth and iron disc, but many of the, "dig everything" guys like the PI's. I don't think a PI should be for a Newbie starting out.

Sandman,

I'm thinking a used Whites Beach Hunter ID might be the way for them to go. It's VLF and the boyant coil shouldn't prove too much of a problem in the shallow water.

The detector pro wader is a good machine for what you are looking for that price range, unless you could find a great deal on an Excal.
