Sending gold to a refinery~taxes?

Any of you who send gold off to a refinery, what do you have to do for your taxes? Is there a special tax rate or no? A dealer told me they tax you 30% but I wonder if that was to scare me into selling to him? Thoughts? Thanks!

I checked into this a bit. As long as your just "refining" ei scrap gold or silver in exchange for .999 gold or silver.... No taxes from what I've been told. So I figured exchange then private sale if I was so inclined.
