My 6 year old son, Blake, and I went to an abandoned limestone pit yesterday. They had dug down a good 20 feet and there were small shells everywhere. We found the teeth you see pictured. No large teeth, or large anything for that matter, just small stuff. Can anyone ID these teeth?? Thanks alot, Bryan

It was. I had searched for 45 minutes without finding any teeth, but I was focusing on finding big teeth. Then, my 6 yr old, Blake, found one of the small, elongated teeth while we were sitting down. From that point on, I started focusing on small teeth, that is when I started finding them. If not for Blake finding that one small one, I would not have found any teeth at all. Blake saved the day!

I'm glad to see that you take Blake along.

Those are great! Did you keep any of the shells? you could help him ID them on line.(good skill to develope) & did he have a good victory dance when he found it? That's half the fun of finding these treasures.

Blake does not get excited yet over the finding of a tooth. He was having too much fun climbing the sand hills and pulling the weeds and finding spent bullet shells. He even broke a few beer bottles laying around. That was his joy. Dad was sweating trying to find the teeth.

The long, slender examples are from some species of sand tiger shark. Looks like you had a nice time!

I know that one well. I took my daughter & her friend to the diamond mine in AR, & they played in a mud hole while I sweated over diamondless mounds. Ah there are more treasures than just the material ones.

Bryan,

If those pits are in a late Cretaceous geologic formation, then start your research with Scapanorhynchus and Cretolamna species. Looks like you two had great fun.

John

Thanks for all the info. There were some interesting, yet small, shells too. Some were round and flat like a dime. I will have to get pics on our next trip out there.
