Found this on a Michigan riverbank after some construction. It's pretty beat up but seems to be
in a sheath. It almost looks as if the sheath was formed of thin copper and then wrapped with leather.

Could it be a dagger, sword handle or tool of some type? The two ribs look like something I have seen on the open end of a sheath. Sometimes when I've seen two ribs like that they were part of a system that allowed the sheath to hang from a belt.

What do you think?

Doesn't really look like a shifter to me. Here's a photo of a 1976 VW shifter.

Maybe a tractor shift lever. The upper (handle part) is about the right length for some I've seen. Can't be sure though.

Maybe the remains of an old wooden handled wrench.
