I went to a spot that I had some luck before but it has been quiet there lately for any good finds. I had a hour lunch break and it was very close so I hit it hard and slow. First decent signal is what looks like a broach pin that says PATENT across it. Looks like the words had gilt at one time. Then as my hour was just about up I got a deep and slightly jumpy signal. I dug it and was surprised to see a coin pop out. Ended up being my first US shield nickel. It's holed and not in the best condition but I'll take it any day. If I find out what date it is I will post it. Thanks for looking! :) image-3415108005.webp image-3856987370.webp image-1005325892.webp image-1209945004.webp image-201201102.webp image-2648885209.webp

A bizarre word to be on a brooch, don't you think?...very cool though.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe a person had the last name patent???

Could the brooch possibly be a
medal pin???

That's one in our parts I wouldn't think most have crossed off the list.

I think the patent item is a piece off something else and not a pin or brooch.

Nice nickel and I like the font used in PATENT.

Nice finds. I have yet to find a shield nickel.

Congrats.

The nickel dried out and most of the detail flaked off un fortunately but enough is there to know what it is easily. Same thing happened to my 1885 v nickel. The soil in my area must be hard on them. Both were found close to the ocean if that's a factor or not. What made me think the patent thing was a pin was the side. I'll take a photo to show you...

The other side is missing or it may have helped to see if it had a latch or something. :)
