Found this on a Georgia barrier island this weekend. Hoping someone can help me date it - I've looked through a couple of online resources, but haven't found anything with a head that looks quite like this one. It's around 18" long. Gary Drayton found some ship spikes off the Atlantic Coast which could be similar. He states first machine cut nails were produced early 1700's, yours appears to be wrought iron so much earlier.
