Can anyone tell me what part of a ship this is from? Also, what material do you think it is as the back was extremely clean and shiny(hard to tell in the pic). It was found in the area of a wreck generally accepted to be about 150 yrs old. Thanks.

Welcome to TreasureNet! And your right - it's a Pirates Life... my favorite part is the booty.

It looks like a tie ring... the base would have been bolted to the decking, or something.

Ropes could be run through the ring or tied off at the ring.

Maybe a "shipwreck" guy can help a little better... No idea on the material from the picture.

Welcome from the UK.

My first thoughts were a handle for the side of a container.

But I like the first response better. However the fixing holes don't seem strong enough to perform that function??

looks like a blank or cover hatch --they were bolted down over holes in the deck--they were removed to check levels in holds (say you were filling with grain or such) and the ring aided in removing and handling it.---when the hold was filled it was bolted down tightly.

Why is the ring retainer off centre?
What if the ring lay naturally - the other way?
It could be a modern day towel holder!!
Some thoughts
Cheers, Mike
