The plan to hit the thin wood between what we thought to be a Roman site was a success last Sunday. We confirmed the target as good & with the knowledge of today as well, we can attack the 2 fields in a more effective manner, after harvest. (saving us many hours of scouting).
This site is looking more like a small rural homestead started in the late Iron Age continuing into the Roman. We will not get as many coins & artefact's as the other Wood/field site but I'm predicting about 50-100 Bronzes, maybe a couple of Silver (this year alone).
Dad dug something we like to find (whilst digging lead), a huge 1st BC-1st AD pot rim (shell tempered ware), from a massive storage jar of about 3ft high by 1.5ft diameter. These are often associated with Iron Age (Celtic) activity but can span into the Romano-Celtic period - a nice transitional piece. So it opens up the possibility of early Roman coins & a possible Celtic find or two.
Only hunted for 2 hours (4 man hours) so happy enough with the 4 Roman Coins, & a circa 1500 Large Buckle.
Best find was my first find of the day & is an Album coin I need:
AD270 Claudius II Gothicus AE Antoninianus. [DIVO C]LAVDIO, radiate head right / [CONSECRA]TIO, eagle standing facing with head right. Minted Rome RIC 266
