I went out to our usual permission this afternoon to show a friend a few pointers on detecting. He got his first machine and wanted to learn. We had a great time and found a few things that were just enough to get him hooked and excited about continuing the hobby!

One of the best looking Gardner bullets I have pulled from this property.

The next hole was this, which I thought might be a cannister shot. Then I turned it over and saw a hole. It rang solid 24 on the Nox like a silver coin would. Not sure what it is. Light like a button, but slightly bigger than my Zouave. Any ideas?

Nice Sharps, too bad it's not a Confederate Gardner.

How to tell the difference? .52 or .58, upper ring? Size, weight, point? I have seen pics of both and it looked more like the Gardner. Bottom is solid.

This is a .58 Cal Gardner. I also have found.54 Cal Gardners. A Gardner has a hollow base and a Sharps has a solid base.

Cool good to know. I was wondering about the base. We have found so many different types out of this site. I need to get a identification book to tell the difference. 3 riger, two ringer, hollow, solid, .52, .54, and .58. So many different types. Thanks for the correction.

Here's a small chart that might help a bit I'm sure you can find better ones on the internet.
Zoom in on this:
