A friend of mine and I hunted a field which had a structure in topo maps from the late 1800's, but was gone by the 1940's. It's currently part of a school, so there has been a ton of modern activity there as well. It was only his second hunt, so he was thrilled to find some square nails from the 1800's and a shotgun shell from the late 1800's. I found several shotgun shells as well, but from what I've found online, most of them are from the early to mid 1900's. I also found one very toasted 1950-D wheat penny and a 2009 William Harrison golden dollar. (I included it in the pics below only because I've never found one before.)

My best find, by far, was a silver and onyx ladies ring. It's marked "Sterling" with a hallmark of the letter "L". I have no idea how old it is, so I would love any help you folks can provide in that area. (And when I posted "I could use some help dating the ring", I don't mean help on how to ask it out on a date. We have already agreed that it's best to just be friends.)

I didn't include any pictures of garbage bag full of trash we dug up, nor did I include the nine dollars or so in clad coins we recovered.

Thanks for looking and Merry Christmas to all of you! (Or Festivus, if you prefer!)

Nice finds hard to put a date on the ring but with the sterling mark I would guess 1950s or up Happy Holidays

Nice ring find! :occasion14:

Usually you date a woman and then put the ring on her finger. I think you are doing it backwards by dating the ring. Just my opinion though.

Almost all the silver rings are marked Sterling. I find hundreds underwater. I have read that most without a makers mark were made before 1940. I am guessing yours could be made anywhere between 1900's and the late 1960's but it would only be a guess. After the mid to late 1070's .925 was the American standard.

Due to the precious metal act of 1906 American rings had to be marked. So if it is American it could date between 1906 and 1970 something as an edumicated guess.

Very nice ornate ring you found. Congrats

Love old brass head stamps for shot guns. Some folks detest them but, they are part of our gutsy heritage so DEAL with it!:whip2::laughing9: That sterling ring looks like Navajo jewelry to me. I love that rustic looking stuff with a passion!:love10: Perhaps the "L" is the initial of the maker. I'd search Navajo jewelry to ID the maker. Sweet ring and relics mate.:headbang:

Love that ring! The "L" hallmark almost looks like a cobra, but probably is not. It may be a Native American-made piece, and would be worthy of researching on the website for NA makers marks! Sub 8-)

Hmmm, looks a lot like the Robert Lincoln Navajo hallmark. If so, that's awesome! Thank you!

Nice find ! The ring does look Navajo with the sawtooth bezel , and the ornamental bits on the shank . I would have guessed 50's to 70's but you may well have nailed down the maker - very nice !

You and Kurios1 were dead on! I found a picture of the exact same ring on the Internet, and it is, indeed, a Robert Lincoln Navajo ring described as "vintage". Thanks, as always, to everyone for their help! (Below is the image I got from the Internet.)
