I went to one of my banks the other day. I have had my mortgage with this bank for almost three years and am in good standing. I also had just opened a checking account with them and had talked to the bank president who I Thought had said they would order and hold for me a 1000 dollars worth of halves. I have multiple banks I order halves from and had never had a problem with them holding halves for me in the vault and allowing me to purchase them 250-300 dollars at a time. When I say hold them I mean just for me alone!
Well I went in with a 1000 dollar check written to me from another bank. I had never had any problem cashing checks like this before. The teller tells me that the president would have to okay my check before she could cash it. I stood in the lobby for 20 minutes waiting then the president comes out and tells me the best she can do for me is to have me drive across town to another bank to cash my check???????? I just got done paying 5100 dollars in home interest to this bank last year alone from my mortgage!
While I was waiting I asked about the halves I thought they were holding and was told that unless I bought them out right they belonged to the bank and they would sell them to anyone who wanted them????? I have never had a problem with a bank holding halves for me. I usually buy them 250-300 dollars at a time until the box is gone then order another. Usually go through a 1000 dollars worth in less than a week!
Needless to say I was upset. I got the name and address of the district manager and wrote her a proffesional letter explaining my problem. Hope to hear back from her. I think that if you make the bank money through interest,etc... you should recieve quality customer service in return. They could have easily called the other bank and confirmed the money in that account then cashed my check. Also way is it so hard to hold a box of halves. If some one else comes in wanting halves they can order and wait for them just like I did!

Oh well I've vented now! On to something else.
By the way this was a Chase Bank. I hear customer service is a area all the Chase banks around here lack!

Whenever I order halves I always try to get there as soon as possible to buy them so that someone else doesn't get them. Keep in mind when halves sit in a vault in a bank they are not doing anything, not earning interest, not being used.

I can understand you being mad about everything but them holding on to them for you. Most banks won't do that. I wouldn't expect my bank to.

if your buying a thousand a week, why not just buy them all at once so you don't have to worry about it

I hate Chase bank. My daughter had an account with them. She went one dollar over her amount and they charged her $35 fine. They continued to charge her $35 until her next pay check was automatically deposited and racked up $600 in fines. We went to talk to them and all they would do is reduce it by $10.

Thanks

If checks are a problem at a bank use cash. Its the universal check accepted by all banks, otherwise there are always ATMS you can go to to get cash in a pinch.
Also, when they get em in Id get em as soon as you can. With the popularity of CRH of late its risky to let em sit.
I have heard in lines from banks I have relationships built up with of people coming in and asking, sometimes while I am there. And of course the age old, oh someone just came in yesterday for halves.
Bad stuff.
I also make it a point to poach halves from others when ever I can. I am not too proud to admit it. I have taken many peoples "orders" or partials where they come in a couple times a week to get say $100 to $200 worth.
The Idea is to limit competition and demoralize them. And its worked, It was pretty bad a while back with all the people asking around, but it dropped off quickly. And fortunately when they did come into play it was when a lot of skunk boxes were going around.

I always try to get them all. Tomarrows pickup she is always trying to order more than I could possibly have money for so this lil old man can get some too. Very disconcerting as I told her we are each convinced that the other will get what we're looking for. HH Mark
Oh and there's a bank I've bought from before that I have an acct at- last couple times I been there poachin they've said NO. One day soon I will try again and if they say NO I will go out to ME truck and get a bag with $900 rolled and go make a deposit. Therefore that competition will have to buy my dumps before they will order more for him- dam I'm gettin ornery too haha.

Yeah, I have done that too a couple of banks, I have filled the boxes back up with taped fed rolls or hand rolls and dropped a few boxes off where I know other CRHs order.
this way they have to buy em to keep there bank ordering, but they wonder order more than they have. I imagine it must make for some ticked off hunters. But thats not my problem.

Man!!! I must have better banks here. With the exception of this one chase bank all my banks hold my halves just for me and I only buy what I order unless of course I ask for the ones people bring in. The head teller just says up front that if some one else comes in looking for halves they don't have any. Glad I don't have to deal with your alls kind around here.
Also I would love to buy all 1000 dollars up front but money just does not allow. You all must have a much better job than me if you can buy as many halves as you all do every week with cash up front. Not everyone has that kind of money. Thats why I really try to take care of my ladies at the bank, They take care of me in return by holding the halves for me!
I must not have the compitition here as you all do. Sounds like its a cut throat operation out where you are!
Good Hunting or Poaching!!! Which ever you call it!
By the way found 6 more 40% Kennedys today and a weak stamped kennedy

So where is your area?

I had a similar problem at First Midwest bank yesterday... well not exactly the same but a problem. I went in to one of their branches last week (there are 3 by me) and asked for halves, they said they didn't have any but called over to the other branch which said they had $750. So I hot footed it over there and grabbed them all. Then I stopped at the third and they said they didnt have any rolls so I asked if they had a bag. They said they had the one in the machine but they would have to count it up right quick. I said I'll take the bag what ever it was. She goes in back then comes out about 10 minutes later and asks for my account # which I don't have at this bank. She said she couldn't sell to me unless I had an account. So the next day I go get an account and go back and tell her I have an account now so I can buy the bag. Now she said she couldn't sell the bag unitl it was full which I kinda figured. So I left my name and number and ask them to call me when it fills up. She calls me the next day and tells me now that she can't sell the back because they ship them out and they can't be sold. I asked if I could order boxes of halves then and she said there was a charge of 10 cents per roll on orders. At that moment, First Midwest Bank just became my new dumping ground!

I have never had a problem with Chase myself... although I have heard the stories. But then again, every bank out there has customers that love em and customers that hate em. I've got four branches around me and seven others within 30 minutes drive so they are very convenient for me and they don't charge me for rolls. Now that I have First Midwest as a new dump, I can utilize the Chase dumpsites as buysites.

As for the "poachers"... It is my personal opinion that you are taking the sport out of this hobby. It's one thing try to score silver and get as much as you can. But to try to finagle the tellers to give them to you after she promised them for somone else? That's just wrong. Its people like you that make a bad name for the others. It will end up where the other guy will be pissed and the banks will start saying that they wont hold for anyone no matter what. But then again why bother telling you this... if you dont care enough to be courtious to other CRHs, then you wouldnt care enough to even have an opinion on this.

Sorry cat J not giving up my area after some of the post I've seen here today. It's in Kentucky and thats all I'm saying!

I know you are from henderson. Remember talking to me awhile Back.

The Poaching in my area is more than justifiable as to the damage that some of them caused. If you wish to talk about taking the fun out of it ask yourself how fun it is for banks to set up a policy where only $50 in change can be ordered at a time, have to deal with tellers telling you they cant sell change because people kept taking it back to the same bank dumping it on them after pulling the silver out.
They would talk about people ordering 500 in dimes and 1000 in halves only to bring back the next day to the same branch $499.60 in dimes and $995.50 in halves. Then do it again, But they would do this at all the branches in town.
I could care less about competition or other CRH's when they are not stepping on me by acting like a moron, brining a lot of attention to them selves and causing banks to change there policies due to one or two abusers of the system. This hobby does cost the banks money. If one stays under the radar and keeps it friendly then its no harm no foul. However. When you get an abuser of the system, and someone telling the tellers they do it to find just the silver or what not, and cost the banks money, They kinda notice.
It has taken months of relations repair in order to get some of the banks here to "allow" half purchases etc.
They work with me because they know I dont bring them back, they know I spend em and sell em and dump them on there competitors banks.

I am also the type of person who hates stupidity. I am the nicest and most helpful and friendly guy you will ever meet but I am also the type that if you do something dumb, or do something to try to harm me in any way or piss me off. I believe in delivering back punishment 10 fold. Perfect example is a guy who flipped me off a couple years ago. I walked up to him and asked him why. he just flipped me off again 3 inches from my face. So I garbed the finger, broke it backwards with a twist, kicked him in the nuts then in the face and walked off leaving him screaming in pain. I dont know why he did that, and I should think he wont do that again.

now, the person I have been poaching from is the same guy that caused the policy changes in some other banks, in fact the banks in this area have been in communication about him and know who he is, he is also a dick too the tellers. So I dont feel the least bit bad about causing him some problems. The tellers say he is a crabby grumpy old man who is mean. I on the other hand am polite, friendly and they like me and flirt with me. So now do you wish to pass judgment against me?

Dave can you put up a different picture of yourself. That photo looks like a little kid with a bicycle but your post sound far from that. Please don't ever get pissed off at me. That god I don't have nuts.

JewelerDave... I wasn't trying to "pass judgement" on you. And you are right, there are a few bad apples out there that spoil the fun for everyone else. I myself have made it a point to be upfront and honest with the tellers when they ask what I do with all the coins. I tell them I look for specific coins that I collect and then bring the rest back and I assure them that I whatever I buy from them that I will not bring back to them and take them to another bank. I again refer to this hobby as "a sport" and in your case it appears to be a stiff competition and your opponant is a bad seed or a "crosstown rival" if you will. So it would appear that you are justified in your neck of the woods. But you have to admit that there are other areas where "poachers" do it for the greed and not for the sport. I always try to make small talk with the tellers myself. Not only does it keep a rapport because you would like to have that same friendly attitude each and everytime you go back so that they will be happy to service you and with those happy relations, I find that the tellers go a little extra because they see you every week. Some might even save stuff for you for when you come back. And in your case you are almost an emassodor because you are trying to cement the teller/collector relationship that the bad seed has damaged. By making small talk I also get info as too if anyone else in my area is buying or dumping at the banks that I frequent.

So good luck with your damage control and keep the faith. Not all CRHs are bad.
