Get a 2 piece scoop and put in your suitcase.
If you are traveling like that the cost of a 2 piece scoop should not be an issue.

I used to hand-carry my metal detectors on the airplane when I flew to Mexico and Hawaii. But that was before 9-11 and al the restrictions since then, so I don't really know anymore with all that. Then, I never had any problems.

You can carry your detector in a carry on, It will be treated as a laptop you will have to take it out of your bag and put it through the scanner. The rods and scoop have to be in checked luggage.
Once I had to turn my detector on to show it worked. Another time I carried my weight belt in my carry on with 8lbs of lead as my checked bag was at max weight, I had to leave either the lead or the belt as together it could be used as a weapon, I left the lead and took the belt.

Check local laws and enjoy your vacation.
NOTE:
Jamaica bans metal detectors of all kinds to be brought onto the island. Two of us traveling had all our detecting gear confiscated at customs at the airport. On the day we left it took over an hour to get our equipment back to pack before the custom agents escorted us and our gear to the flight check in where the airline rep. had to sign that the bags were into the security area and could not be retrieved until we claimed our bags when back in the good old USA. It made for a not so fun in the sun vacation. On my next trip to Jamaica I was specifically asked about metal detecting equipment, which that time I had none, learned my lesson the first time and glad I did.

WaterWalker,,,Thank You for your advice,,I now know to check the laws and am glad to hear you got your equipment back,,
