My grandfather was a garbage man for many years back in the 30`s/40`s, the stuff this man collected from peoples garbage was beyond amazing. Old guns, furniture,photos etc, he collected everything.
When he passed away in in the mid 60`s, my father and uncle split what he had, my dad kept the guns, my uncle got the coin collection and an extensive collection of American Indian artifacts. When I was 13, my cousin and I snuck a peek at the artifacts, moccasins, beaded clothing, pipes, arrowheads clay pots etc.
All these items were collected and preserved meticulously by my grandfather, felt lined display cases with type written notes for each article explaining where he got it, from whom, dates etc. Two items stood out and still do to this day, the first being a deer leg bone with an arrowhead still stuck in place and second, a handwritten letter detailing the exact location and land owners name of an area he dug a substantial part of his collection.
My uncle stopped by today, needed help replacing a bulb in his car, as I replaced the bulb I mentioned the collection and if it would be possible to get a photocopy of the letter and maybe a few pics of the collection.
That`s when he told me he sold the entire collection about five years ago, talk about feeling like being hit in the gut with a brick, I was absolutely speechless. He noted my shock and offered to give me my grandfathers discharge papers, doubt he`ll follow through but it would be nice.
I do hope I remember enough info about the letter so I can attempt to find the current land owner in the hope that I can search a few artifacts, might ease the pain a bit.
