I did some detecting with my brother near a local dump that is from the 50's and we dug a nice '53 D rosie and a little box, possibly silver, with a fancy design on it. I was thinking it is an old match box but im not sure. Any help would be appreciated. Please take the time to watch our video where we recover these finds and show some other cool finds we have made lately. Thanks for looking and HH!

Nice digs and thanks for the pictures

Job well Done!

Nice finds, and you found a mouses treasure chest! It's not very big (to us), and didn't have any treasure in it, but not many people find them! Sure looks silver to me, congrats!

Forget the silver...That box is awesome..

Lol thanks! Too bad the mouse didn"t hide gold in it!

Matchbox maybe? And definitely looks silver. Look at the inside hinges with a magnifying glass, that is where the marks are likely to be.

You have a very interesting find there ! I'm a bit confused at the way it's constructed - and is there a piece missing on the end ?
have you been over it with a good glass to find a wee hallmark ?

( I can't figure what the function of the recessed area on the box top is all about - place for a striker ?, a mirror ?
a picture ? I agree with Susan the inside near the hinge bearing may reveal a hallmark under good light and a glass)

I have checked the box for markings and the only one I can see is a 6. Im not sure what the area at the top of the box is used for too. Im also not sure if there was supposed to be another end or not. I will take more pics of other angles.

Love the box. That's way cool.

More pics...

Gorgeous box. I agree it certainly looks to be made of silver.

I don't want to scratch it on my test stone because I dont want any surface of the box to wear down, so I guess I might never know what its made of. Im surprised there was no sterling marking on it though, every old piece of silver I have ever found
is marked sterling.

If I remember correctly, there's a way to smell test it. Experts please chime in :)
