The wife and I went to the beach for our usual October 4 day weekend at the Delaware beaches. She shops, I detect and we both enjoy some good seafood. I spent most of my time at Bethany where we stay. The recent storms took a lot of the beach that was there so most of the beach was pretty clean. But I do know how to find a few spots that don’t get cleaned or detected most of the time and I did find a nice area that gave up a lot of WW2 ordinance and some coins. The star of the weekend was a nice little gold plated silver infinity ring with a nice batch of tiny FAKE diamonds. The way they were set I was sure they were real, but I tested them when I got home and was disappointed with the results.
I did find 2 toy cars, the ring, a zipper pull, a pair of magnetic earrings that stuck to the mesh scoop I was using, and a couple of cheapy pendants, along with 261 coins with a face value of $22.11 and a lot of World War 2 ordinance. They ordinance is brought in every time they add sand to the beach. Last year they did a major beach restoration so lots of brass from WW2.
57 pieces of artillery detonators including a M21A4 Booster plate.
Lots of obturator or traveling band (used to engage the rifling in the barrel). 5 pieces of 100mm at the top, then 71 pieces of 40mm and on the bottom 97 pieces of 20mm. You can see the marks from the rifling on the pieces on the left. The grooves are distorted by the force of the shell exploding and the brass being torn apart.
I did detect a little at OC and Rehoboth. I spent a few hours on each beach and found a few coins, but both beaches were pretty clean overall. The only special find was this masonry tool some kid must have left on the beach. I bet dad was mad when he couldn’t find it when he went to work. I wanted to get to coin beach, but it just didn’t work out this trip. Maybe in the spring when we go back. I wish I could get there right after a storm, but that doesn’t usually work with my schedule.
So a lot of clad a little silver and a pile of brass. Not a bad weekend overall. Thanks for looking and may your coil lead you to good things.
