Silver canister

Hope someone might know what this item is. It is stamped 925 silver. A very small opening on the top only. I think it might be an old ships inkwell. Any help much appreciated. Canon

I think you may be right about the ink well, not sure about the ship connection. Here is a ton of ink wells to see, but check out the second one, it reminds me of yours.
