I got my first "box" of halves today, which actually turned out to be loose coins in a bag. I didn't mind because I didn't have to do any unwrapping.

Found a few 40% coins in my first run through the bag. Now I am doing a more thorough look (found one more 40%). I have seen a few halves that have completely smooth edges, no grooving at all. Did someone do this, or is there some significance of no gooves?

I also discovered after my first run through that plastic gloves are very handy in keeping the fingers away from all the grime.

My bad!

Smooth edges are usually attributable to heavy use in Vegas slots.

Hey Jo. I went through several boxes a while back where alot of the silver was just like you are referring to....very smooth edges. The rims were so worn that alot of the copper was exposed so at first galnce they looked like clad.....tricky. The sound of the silver is dead giveaway...lol.

Yes, I agree about the filth.....coins are dirty...nasty.

Aside from the slot-machine halves, the older silver is going to have worn edges anyway.

I think that is partly why they switched to clad...it does not wear so easily.

If I look at the edges of a roll of halves, and I see a bright silver coin with a worn edge, I would bet the coin itself that it is going to be a Ben, Walker, Or Barber (which I have not found yet).

I haven't noticed this with silver coins down here in S.Fl.. I do notice many very worn clad halves though. My last box (3 days ago) produced only one 64 half, better than nothing. I don't wear gloves but I do wash my hands immediately when done. Agreed, coins are dirty! :)
