This is the type of precious find that is unexpected, especially in a school yard that has been detected extensively. It was like 4" down under a big tree. I researched the beautiful pendant and this is what I found:
The Four Way Medal is also known as a Cruciform, and also a Scapular Medal (It takes the latter name from the medal at the top. Traditionally, the Scapular Medal features the Sacred Heart of Jesus on one side and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel on the other side, which, on this medal, is on the reverse). To the right of the Four Way Medal is the ever-popular St. Christopher medal; at the bottom is the equally popular Miraculous Medal; and to the left is the husband of Mary, St. Joseph. The words “I am a Catholic; please call a priest” are inscribed on the back, to indicate to an emergency worker the wearer’s desire for the last sacraments.
I cleaned it with baking soda and came out really beautful. Definitely a keeper and a great conversation piece. This particular medal seems to be vintage for which it may be valuable despite a scratch on the back.
It is curious that close to it I dug a $2.50 token from Gold-n-Detectors in Golden Colorado. It happened to be planted tokens as part of a promotion. They were placed where there was a silver coin. However, the person who planted the token, missed the valuable medal next to the coin
