Silver, Lead, Or who knows..

G’Day,
I was out swinging the detector today and found this piece. It’s got some weight to it but I don’t think its lead. (It’s Harder then any lead I have seen) I have no way to test it without the chemicals. It’s also looks like a bullet, if so it may be from the Mexican revolution days and its diameter would have been huge. Any help with an I.D. will be a great help.

By looking i would say 100% bullet from what time period ,wouldn't know.

That's a spent bullet. Fired and impacted something.

Thanks Bart, The caliber must have been BIG. There is a radius on one side and looks to be over 2" if the bullet was intact. There were many battles in this area during the Mexican war of independence. (year 1810)

is it hollow inside. If so stick something in it and see if you find any grease. 2 inch diameter makes me think not a bullet. Reminds me of an old grease cup. Had a threaded end that screwed into the bearing and you would fill the cup up with grease and screw it down a couple of turns when you needed lube. Looks as if the cup may screw off the base but just an educated guess.

Thanks for the feed back Mike, I was thinking it was not a bullet for the size and shape. It was found on a high ridge line of the hills near me. Not much is going on there for the last 100 years after the War. So not too sure how it got there. Any way thanks for looking.

You can see the rifling lines in the second two pictures. The easiest way to get an idea on size would be to weight it and use the bullet grains to try to extrapolate size.

Hi Phil, It seem too hard and too big for a Wadcutter. So i'm still not sure. Also that type of amo is not used down here.

Weigh this piece in grains and take another picture with a ruler please. I’m fairly certain it’s a bullet of some kind. Could be a modern.50 but won’t know unless we have a weight.

You can't really judge the original radius/diameter on a bullet that mushed. Lead flows and distorts on impact.

An image with a ruler would help a lot.

I looks like it has a cannelure (ring with little lines) and since the lead is hard its most likely a modern bullet. The roundish part at the back is probably close to the original diameter. That may give you an idea as to what caliber it was.

Thanks everyone, It looks to be a bullet of some sort. due to the it hitting some thing or some one ( Mexico.haha) We may never know what Cal. or year its from. I will look for more next time i go out.

Some of the old time pistols used in the Balkans were like .50 and .70 calibers. I am not a gun expert, perhaps your piece is from something like a buffalo gun.

You may be right. There is a lot of old stuff down here. They just found a per-Spanish site not to far from were I am. ( with buildings and temples) and nobody cares. Crazy place this is.
