Type IV: Modern Reverse Indian Peace Medals

Age: Made during the 20th century and up to the present day

Scarcity: Rare to Available

Cost: From $20 up

Definition: A reverse IPM is an IPM-type medal or IPM commemorative made or authorized by North American Indian tribes and distributed or sold both within and outside the tribe. These can be made of any metal but are most often in sterling silver and created for tribes by private mints. The obverse typically depicts the current tribal chief or leader and the reverse is modeled after authentic IPM designs, such as the clasped hands of the warrior and the soldier, or the crossed tomahawk and peace pipe. The inscription may or may not make a reference to peace. It could be argued that these are genuine modern-day IPMs, although the order of giving and receiving is reversed, hence the name. While many tribes have issued medals for many reasons, IPM designs are not common on tribal medals. It is far more common to find tribal symbols or flags. Here are two examples from the Mescalero Apache and Pawnee tribes.

* Mescalero Apache IPM

Made by the Franklin Mint in 1973 of pure silver, with design input from the tribe, this beautiful medal features the chief (President Wendell Chino) of the tribe on one side and the traditional IPM peace and friendship handshake on the reverse. It reads "Peace and Friendship 1873-1973."

Welcome to Treasure Net Vodka... :) I shoulda welcomed you the first time!

I just googled that set... here is one on e-bay going for $22.72 after 7 bids. It has been graded. Yours is still in the original box/wrapper... that must count for a few bucks more? I dunno... It's .999 silver I guess...

Welcome Vodka1000,

A friend of mine, (now deceased) in OK, found a original
peace medal given to a Choctaw leader in the 1800's.
It was buried in the yard of an old house, children probably were playing with it when it was lost.

At the time, 20 some yrs ago, it was worth $6,000, he had an article in the local paper about finding it, he used a Whites detector.

Fossis...............
