I met up with Greg (CanYouDigIt) today at a site he got permission to detect. All was quiet until we hit a trough that was washed out from the recent rains. I got a bunch of Wheaties, a 1944 Mercury Dime and some other goodies, but my find of the day was when I eyeballed the silver plated US Air Force button sticking out of the sand. It may not be my best button, but it is a welcome addition to my button collection. No day of detecting is complete for me without finding at least one button!

The backmark is not in the Albert's book but it is a variation of AF1A. This backmark reads "WATERBURY BUTTON COMPANIES, INC."

Nice score on the button and merc Neil  that button's a beauty too!

Indeed Neil,...turned out to be a "not too shabby" day of hunting! I'm going to find out about the adjacent property and see if I can't get the "ok" on it. I'll keep you posted.

My haul wasn't quite as good as Neil's, but I did find my first ring! (albeit costume) Oh well. What can one expect only being barely a month into the hobby???

Let's do another hunt soon Neil!! Find us a "goodie" to hunt. :occasion14:

Yes that is a nice one to add to your collection.
I made a couple of eyeball finds myself this spring on freshly turned soil.

How old do you think that button is Neil?

USAF Button

Neal
Had those on my issued USAF Blue's (summer and winter) and Horse Blanket (Overcoat) in 1963:thumbsup:

Nice button and in good shape, cool find. Arty

nice finds Neil, sure nice when mother nature opens her arms to some of those long lost treasures.....well done!!!!

That AF button is a nice find Neil. Even though its not all that old, they seem to be difficult to find. In all the years of hunting I've only found one myself (coat-sized). Nice hunt!
