Went for a quick hunt in the neighbors backyard today hoping to find some silver coins. I got way more than a silver coin! After about 3 minutes I got a solid quarter signal on the e-trac. Dug down about 4 inches and realized that I had been fooled by another aluminum can. When I pulled the "can" out of the hole I was stunned to say the least. It appears to be an old silver pocket watch with possible gold hinges. The watch has met it's match with the lawn mower and isn't even close to complete but I am very happy with today's find. There appears to be a several number inside the backing of the watch. Is there any way to ID or date this watch by the number? Any cleaning tips? Thanks for looking!

Nice find but getting a date is gonna be tough asmerri!

Go over every surface including the inside of the bezel ring with a decent loupe , you should find additional marks- if not
perhaps a watch specialist on this site will "chime " in with some timely info. (sorry , couldn't resist ) I'm guessing 1880's
to 1900 - just a hunch . Great find !

Nice silver score there! :occasion14:

Nice watch case! Silver is just icing on the cake.

That old silver just has the " IT" factor, nice job.

"IF" you can figure out the maker, the serial number will be easily to date. Popular makers like Waltham, elgin etc. have website you can look up the serail number.

Without any other markings I doubt solid silver, I got one just like it, it's plated, heavy plate, but plate.

Hi Rick,

We're you able to find a maker in yours?

Actually I never tried, but with a diameter, they are very large, and that reeded edge it might not be too hard. I will give it a try sometime before the day is over. I need to go out for a few first.

I don't think it was a Timex.
It did take a licking but did not keep on ticking
