Silver Question Up dated with pics.

I know I read about this here, but can't seem to find it now. Is Community Silver, silver plate?

My daughter is a manager at the Good Will store here in town. Called this morning and told me they just put out two boxes of silverware. I went down to look and it, and it didn't say sterling, and was not marked .925. So i passed on it.

I bought two knives with silver handles that were not marked. $.19 each. At a yard sale I bought $300 in a carving set that was not market. Paid $5. All were silver. You shouldn't passup on a cheap chance at silver. So far I haven't found any plate in the stuff I do buy.

more then likely yes plated.. probly had A1 in with the marks right? if u see A1 PASS it is plate

No other markings. Just community silver. 29 pieces total. The table knives have the handle and blade all one piece. Not stainless blade and a different handle like others. All for $6.35 with the tax. So if its not what I want, I can return this within 10 days. If you guys & gals say its good, I'll post the weight.

Also, what kind of acid do you test silver with?

When it is tarnished with that "un-natural blue" hue, it is 99% likely to be plated. Chances are very slim you will find true sterling that isn't marked. If it doesnt say sterling or 925 (or 800, 833, etc) it is probably plated and I would pass. If there is any indication that it is plated I would pass. "Sterling TRIPLE" = plated. PL or PLATE = plated. "Deep Silver" = plated.

What you have is plated. The pattern name is Sheraton and was first produced in 1910 until sometime around 1942 I believe. Here is a link-

As a rule, 99.5% of the time American made sterling silver will be marked as such with "sterling", "sterling silver", "925" (or higher), "coin", "pure coin", with the exception of some early coin silver pieces.
