No matter the soil I get lots of noise chirps crisp clear chirps on target but constant chatter with every pass.
I don't recall it having so much noise.
is this normal? it has been many years since using this unit regular so I just dont remember
also when I was younger I wrapped the coil wire with electric tape tapping ot to the shaft all the way up. Would this interfere at all with the coil?

First I would go with the obvious and remove the cable connection and reconnect it. Inspect the pins to ensure you don't have corrosion.
Did you leave batteries in it? Check for corrosion on contacts.
Next culprit could be EMI. Go to a place you used to use it and it worked well to see if your location isn't causing issues.

As for the cable, as long as it isn't really loose around the pole near the coil you should be ok.
If you have a coil cover, remove it and clean out anything inside there and bottom of coil

all connections good no corrosion. It sat unused for at least 8 years. without taking it apart not sure what boards look like. Honestly surprised it still works being 30 ish years old.
It does still hit the target well just lots of chatter.
Thanks for the input there isnt much out there on these old units

I own a Cibola.
But, I'm unfamiliar with the Silver Sabre, and don't know if it can be ground balanced, or if it has factory pre-set GB.
I'd send it in to Tesoro, and they can fix it. Lifetime warranty, ya know...!

I actually didn't know that I may give them call and send it out over the winter.
This is the only detector I have ever used and way out of touch on the tech.
This is the silver sabre download%20(2).webp

Are you the original owner? Did you send in the warranty card when you bought it if you bought it new?
If yes on all those then you have the warranty. But if not it will cost shipping to them and $50. The 50 covers most normal repairs and shipping back to you.

Also have you tried turning your sensitivity down? If you have it cranked, they can be chatty

No the man who taught me detecting gave it to me at about age 11 so that was about 27 years ago. I just went on their site a few new models peeked my interest. But again not being up on tech not sure what would fit my needs.
I am in MI and just do it as a less than part time hobby.
I like the descrim setting I ise this a lot. Any suggestions on what their current line?

Look at the serial number, my Silver Sabre is A3xxxx, A3 means 3rd anniversary of Tesoro, the one I have was built in 1983, the first year of the Silver Sabre. A4 would be 1984 etc.

Mine was messing up, Rusty said send it on in, Allen called, said it would be the $50 standard fee to repair and tune it up and ship it back. Im awaiting its return....

The Silver Umax is the current offspring of the Silver Sabre. If you dont want all metal, get the Mojave, both around $250, both now run off single 9v battery, coils are 5 pin, all interchangeable with your Sabre and vice versa.

Id spend the $50 regardless and keep thinking about a new one. Ask yourself how much money is an inch or four more worth?

Haha I'm in Michigan too!! What area?
If you're close you're more than welcome to try out any of mine!!
I wish I could have tried before I bought but it worked out. I live each and every one thanks to all the gents suggestions on the forums and my own research.

I have 9 tesoros and all but two are still made today. Compadre is pretty sweet if you have good ground where you are

Well it depends what your budget is, and what you want to do with it.
I have to think that the Mojave is a great choice right now. It's hot on gold, nice coil on it, light, has ground switch if you ever get into bad ground, and has the sensitivity know. Heck if a deal for 250.
But if you plan on upgrading maybe one of their ground balance models. Outlaw 5 pin or vaquero 4 pin. Outlaw more for jewelry and coin hunting and vaquero more for deeper relic hunting, in my opinion.
Tell us more about what you will use it for and where and it'll help you out

I'll second that..

Mojave is their best deal going, and I'd say the 3 coil package Outlaw if you plan on detecting lots of different places. Vaquero will be a bit deeper and can also be a good coin machine, but I'd still take the Outlaw (or Mojave if price is an issue).

I'm in the Lansing area.

I like finding all metals so having one that is in the middle for jewelry coins and relics would be my interest.
The Outlaw did catch my eye.
There was a guy here on the local Craigslist that had a Cibola with G.B. for sale but I missed it.
I recently have got back to detecting and had forgotten how much I enjoyed it.

Yeah it's alot of fun. And addicting.
I have too many, bit not so many that I'm going to get rid of any.... Lol
