Silver six pence ride or you take the Shank's Pony 1846
In the first years of the gold rush ,transport was an issue. Most gold miners didn,t have a horse or cart ,they walked.Often some knew they would rather get share of the gold by other means as mining for it seemed like too hard work
Even as early as 1851 wagon rides were quite a common site.A six pence was the common price for a ride between to mining towns and that included the return fare.Equal to 5 cents today. Sounds like a real good deal but it would take a person about a half-hour of hard work to earn this much.So most were forced to use the Shank,s Pony. Yep Walk.
last nite about 6 pm i went out to place that was as a pick up point or a bus stop by todays terms .i found a few shards and unknown button and a silver 1846 silver six pence[UK]. English money was in Australia from 1788-1910.Thats my silver coin for the year and yes its still over 100 degrees.
