Seems like forever since I've found anything worth posting. Almost a month since my last silver. I guess it was worth the wait.

I was expecting something good when I found the half. Was expecting a bottle cap when I found the quarter...so jaw hit the ground there.:laughing7:

Half was a nice clean signal. Felt it was something good, so I gave it a wide berth. Did not hit with the trowel. But there still appear to be some scratches on it:BangHead:. Probably need to do a better job of cutting plugs. The Barber Half came out of the ground nice and pretty. The quarter, not so much! It was pretty much black coming out of the ground. Admittedly cleaned it up with some baking soda. I know that is frowned upon by collectors. Probably would not have done it if it were a lower mintage coin. But was hard to make out some of the detail on the coin as it had a substantial layer of black tarnish on it. I would prefer to see the coin as it likely looked going into the ground. Did not think to get pictures of it until I had already started cleaning.

She turned out to be a beauty. Not sure if having a coin professionally cleaned would remove the tarnish and not sure of the cost. If anyone has any input here, I am all ears. There will be future coins where I feel stuck in the same Catch22.

I agree that these are EXCELLENT examples of good finds! WTG!

But, I kinda wonder, just what kind of finds are you saying isn't worth posting? ;)

Nice!

I'd be extremely happy with those finds ! I've not yet found any Seated Liberty type coins .

Nice!

The half a five gallon pail full of bottle caps and pull tabs I have pulled out of the ground over the last month...not worth posting. Perhaps when I get it full I will post a picture just for giggles.:laughing7:

Awesome finds! Great detail on your silver!

Don't beat yourself up over the scratches...it happens to the best of us. You did good giving the signal a wide berth, so my best advice (based on experience) is try not to pry the dirt under/around the coin so that it ends up flying out of it's resting place. I'm not saying you did this, just that that will definitely cause some unintentional scratches. In my case I've learned to try to pinpoint very well before digging and then be sure to pinpoint with the probe as close as possible, then gently go searching from there. I still make mistakes, just not as many :D
Good luck and congratulations on two great silver specimens!

I think you hit it on the head. I used a prying motion to get the target out. Probably a stone or something near the target that scratched it in this case. I've thought about this before. But haven't been able to bring myself to cutting a gigantic plug. I'll have to experiment with a method similar to what you describe.

Well, to each their own, of course. ;) But, if you're saying that in the last month you've found absolutely nothing but pull tabs. well then, you have my most heartfelt sympathies. ;) LOL

Thanks for sharing what you did they are EXCELLENT!

But, don't be such a stranger. :)

That is why I love this hobby so much. Sure you find a lot of junk, but when you hit it is like landing the big one. Nice Finds!
