Silver Umax and Golden Umax?

I have owned neither, so this is just my opinion. I would say that the Golden µMax is probably the better machine, but it is priced so close to the Vaquero and even the Deleon that it probably gets overlooked. I know Monte has posted some negative comments about using the Golden in mineralized soil, because of the preset GB, but I don't believe he popped the face plate off and set the GB to his soil. That's not an oversight on his part, as his comments were about the Golden out of the box. Apparently there are two adjustments in there, one to set the GB, and one to adjust the tones.

One of the few things I liked about the Sov GT was the tones. To have tone ability in a Tesoro would be great.

I intend to add one to my arsenal sometime this summer. I'd like to get a used one, but they are hard to find. Generally if one shows up for sale, it's sold within minutes. Makes you wonder if the Golden is another well kept secret?

robert roy,

I have asked the very same question here on Tnet. I am coming to the conclusion that it is overlooked because of it's lack of GB and a lot of detectorists do not understand how good that adjustable notch is. The other problem seems to be that in it's price range buyers want a digital readout and they feel they are not getting their moneys worth because it doesn't have one. As you know Robert from other posts on this subject, there is a lot of misunderstanding about this detector. Joe

Hummmmm. Lack of ground balance? I suspect your right.
I imagine the debth is about the same as the Silver uMax?

Robert,

All of us regulars here on Tnet know that the Silver uMax and ALL of the Tesoros get great depth with or without GB, it's just a fact. But someone not really that familiar with the Tesoros might see that lack of a GB control as a real turn off. Heck I would like to see a GB control on it too. Tomorrow if I were going detecting I would not hesitate to grab the Golden and take it coinshooting. It goes plenty deep and handles trash beautifully.
The detector manufacturers have to design and market their machines so as to build a pricing and feature structure so the detectors appeal to the customers, they buy, and the manufacturers make money. I venture to guess that most of the detectors are sold because of brochures and dealers. How that brochure is written and what the Dealer decides he wants to sell (dealers with large inventories sell what they need to move) is where it's at. If those two go wrong the whole marketing plan is in the toilet. Joe

Lack of ground balance?

More accurately: "Lack of external ground balance".

Apparently it's not that hard to GB the machine to your soil by taking the face plate off. At least that's what I read.

Thanks Joe and Dan.
I am torn between the Silver Saber II
Silver Saber uMax
Silver uMax.

Can't make up my mind! I have a source where I can buy used with a 90 day warranty.

I already have an Ace 250 and an MXT. Would like to add one more to my detectors and then thats it No more luxery items! ;D

Robert,

Ya, I agree that is a tough choice!
I think the Sabre II is about 1# heavier than the uMax, and uses two 9Vs verses one on the uMax.That may help you choose. Does the Sabre uMax have the push button for pinpoint? How do you feel about that? Joe

I've never used a machine that didn't have a push button so can't imagine how you WOULD pinpoint.
I need to find someone with a silver and see how its done. All the dealers in Indiana are a good distance from me.

robert roy,

It's not really a problem. If the target is three or more inches deep ,just pinpoint as usual. If it's shallower or a larger target just raise the coil 3 or 4" and pinpoint. Your third options is crank the sensitivity knob down to 1,2,or 3 and you will have no trouble. Joe

takes weight off the arm

There isn't much weight on your arm to begin with.

Dan

Really don't even need the pinpoint buttons on tesoro - especially the Silver Umax. They pinpoint great by "xing" the target. I use the silver umax almost every time I hunt in every situation and I love it. It is super smooth running.
