Detector(s) used
Silver Umax
Used it only 4 times(10-12 hours) in total found about 105 coins,a class ring, some wedding bands I think, couple of keys, a 1967 Penn Mutual commem. medal.-size of a dollar...
Pro's
-Very light
-Simple to use
-Powered by one battery...still running on my first one w/o using headphones.

Con's
-Will give a misleading 'good target' signal on large pieces of iron,(especially),large pieces of anything really even when the disc is on max...maybe thats how it is for every detector

Couple questions though for anyone who has ever used this machine
-How deep can it find-pennies?
-dimes?
-nickels?
-rings?

-How do I properly use the sensitivity knob-Mine is always set on 7
-What should it be in trashy areas?on the beach(fresh/salt),parks,schools?

Thanks guys.

Yes it's that way with all but the Minelabs.

That depends on coil used and soil conditions. With the stock coil in mild soil those targets will hit at somewhere between 6-8 inches deep. With the 12x10 coil 8-11 inches deep.

I ran mine full open all the time. This can sometimes be noisy but I learned to distinguish noises from targets. With all Tesoros you need to use the highest sensitivity possible if you want great depth. This isn't always true of other brands.

Thanks guys.

Hope my comments are of some help. These are just my thoughts.

Badger, when you mention the large coil, do you mean the double D coil? Misiek, I've had this as a back-up machine for a while now, and I've been impressed with it. The biggest plus is its weight. I could swing the thing all day. My Fisher isn't a heavy detector, but it seems like it weighs a ton after using the Tesoro. I haven't had it out much in relic sites, but I think its time will come. I intend to take it out housesite and CW hunting very soon (but I will also have my 1266-X in the trunk, just to see if the Tesoro misses anything).

I was referring to the 12x10 concentric coil. I don't think they make a DD for the Silver.

I've grown to really like the DD coils but size for size the concentric is deeper. It's also much better for high trash sites. It works like a rifle to shoot between the trash.

I sold my Silver uMax with the 12x10 to a person in the UK. They just love it. I could kick my own butt for selling it.

I'm planning to get another for next summer. The trick is to hunt slowly like you were using a Minelab Explorer.

Given the same time to hunt a certain area, a Silver would kick a Minelab in number of keepers. The only thing is I wish the Silver had tones.

Mhmmm very interesting stuff.I think I'll have to look into the 12x10 because the standard coil in trashy area seems pretty good if youre looking only for coins. In my case I wouldnt want to overlook nickels and rings. We'll see how things go by the end of the month, the more I use this machine the more i'll learn and then I'll see if it needs an upgrade.

We all have to learn for ourselves. I've spent a lot of money over the years testing detectors. Thanks to ebay I can now get some of that money back once I've finished with a machine.

i'm fully convinced the best deal in metal detectors today is the Silver uMax or one of the older uMax models. The DeLeon and Tejon are also very excellent. I think the digital meter on the DeLeon is more accurate than the digital meter on my Explorer. And, all-round I found my DeLeon deeper than my present Explorer II.

But the Silver is a very deep seeking machine with that 9x8 spoke coil and it's even better with the 12x10. I picked lots of indian cents out of nasty iron sites with that 12x10.

I just wonder how deep my Eldorado is going to go with the 9x8 coil?
I am also thinking on getting the 12x10 coil for it.

And also debating on Champion System Depth-master to hear the even weaker ones?

Designed for all coin and relic hunters (except any White's or Garrett GTA's), the champion Depth-master will help you find deeper targets while protecting your hearing against loud blasts!

Just make sure you get a lot of practice ground balancing that Eldorado and remember to do it every time you go out and check it a few times while you're hunting to get an idea if the mineralization varies much in your area. The big deal with the Silver uMax is that it has a fixed ground balance and if you're hunting in an area that has low to moderate mineralization its great because its one less thing you gotta worry about. I like the Eldorado I have, but then the ground is real variable here and your depth gets killed if you don't have some kind of GB.
