It's Labor Day weekend and we're down near Grayling, Michigan (my daughter lives there) checking out the coin situation. One can't cover a lot of ground in two hours especially with a bad knee.

I found someone hauling black dirt with a small pickup truck and dumping it in their yard. Permission granted I hunted the sidewalk and found the stuff you see in one of the pictures.

Then I looked at the meager pile of black dirt and decided to swing my coil by it. All of a sudden I get this solid coin signal deep into the pile. With permission I dug way down into the heap and near the bottom layer I got a blasting signal. I spread out the dirt and there it was...another War nickel.

You can easily tell these by the large mint mark positioned over Monticello.

"War nickel Synonym for Wartime nickel.
Wartime nickel Five-cent coins struck during World War II with the composition 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese."

Well now my knee tells me I've had enough for this vacation.

From now on I'm following the dirt truck ;D

Badger P.S. I asked where they got the dirt and they told me. Guess where I'm hunting next? ::)

Nice finds Badge.Id check the numbers on that jumbo valve stem. There are a couple of the large ones that are very sought after.I dont know which models but I think if you look on Ebay you could figure it out......Congrats....Joe

Badger- the size of items you dig up is amazing!!
I've dug up an old trailor rim and metal 2 feet long, but crosscut saw blades!!!!

Those dirt trucks just keep moving soil taken from some old areas sometimes, I deal with people that use soil all the time and some of the stuff I see has pieces of pottery, old broken glass and some nice old rusted square nails and iron fragments. Just keep your eyes open for those little clues , they might just lead to the mother load one day! Nice job!

Badger!!! :o Looks like an awesome holiday weekend for you!!! 8)

Wow! You did good! Congrats!!

You're exactly right!

Many THers don't realize that black dirt is taken from old sites. It's the top soil where most of the finds are located (top 6 inches).

If one could hunt the dirt piles of the local supplier, one would find some great stuff.

So true Seeker. The dirt I found the nickel in came from a little known swimming hole. I learned about that place by talking to the person who hauled it.

Badger, cool finds if you didn't already know the item in the right hand corner of the 4th picture is used to pull out the inside of a tire valve stem. There's a piece that screws on to the end.
