VIDALIA ... a sandbar in the MISSISSIPPI RIVER was used as a dueling ground. It was located between here and NATCHEZ. In SEPTEMBER of 1827 a general battle amongst the seconds in a duel led to the deaths of RICHARD CUNEY and NORRIS WRIGHT. Three others were wounded and one of them was JIM BOWIE. ORLEANS PARISH - NEW ORLEANS ... ANTONIO and CARLO MATRANGA arrived from PALERMO, SICILY in 1890 and took over the MISSISSIPPI RIVER docks. They were soon challenged by the PROVENZANO FAMILY. Police Chief DAVID HENNESSY began to investiGate and was murdered. Nine Mafia members were indicted and all but three were acquited. Those three got
hung juries. The locals were outraged and lynched the leaders and shot all nine of the others.
