DEADWOOD ... three outlaws buried 47 gold ingots in 1884. They were captured by the Army later and all died in prison without revealing the location. source PAGE 47, GET RICH QUICK BY GREGORY T. POPE, POPULAR MECHANICS, MAY 1995
PENNINGTON COUNTY - HILL CITY ... a large washtub half full of gold dust and nuggets is buried in the BLACK HILLS near here. Worth at least several hundred thousand dollars. Miners SHAFER AND HUMPHREY worked two years and filled the washtub. The claim was finally worked out so HUMPHREY took his half and returned to his wife and children in OHIO. SHAFER filed another claim a few miles down NEWTON FORK and continued prospecting until he died. He didn't gamble and his only vice was chewing tobacco. He had no relatives and no friends. Many think it's buried near his old cabin along the road to DEERFIELD a short distance above NEWTON FORK. source PAGE 80, THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO TREASURE HUNTING BY CARLISLE MICHELSOHN (1973)
